PPC, SEO, or Both?

Friday, February 1st, 2013

A business immersed in the world of digital advertising may know one question that is difficult to answer. That question is, ‘Do I go with PPC advertising or go with organic SEO?’ You might be wondering which one has more advantages over disadvantages and truthfully that is going to depend on your business and your business goals. There are a few topics to consider when trying to make this decision, but first what do each of these things mean? Pay per click advertising is exactly what it sounds like, a business pays per click on their Google ads. Which, at first glance may appear to be a bit pricy, but with further explanation it is not. Organic SEO searches are not bought, but are achieved through relevance by following SEO guidelines. Both are great ways to obtain leads for your business, but which is better?

Well let’s first look into the benefits because if the benefits of one vs the other is better for you, then that can make the decision easier. As mentioned before, PPC advertising at first glance may seem to be a bit pricy, but if the campaigns are well managed, the costs will seem more reasonable due to the outcome the campaigns can produce. The advantages of PPC advertising include, targeting specific demographics, immediate rankings and results, test search terms prior to optimizing, can select your daily budget, make instantaneous changes, levels playing field (meaning it doesn’t matter the size of your company),and increases local visibility.

Organic SEO also has its own advantages worth reading about. The first and foremost reason to try SEO would be that costs would only come into play if you were to hire an SEO agency.  Another reason SEO could be better is because people tend to ignore the PPC ads and click on the actual search results. Less than 25% of consumers who search will click on a PPC ad over an organic search, thus giving organic searches more traffic for possible leads. Also, once a business has a highly ranked keyword it tends to find itself in a permanent position on rankings. This will hold true only if the business continues to watch their competition and keeps applying the most updated guidelines and techniques. So, now that you have seen some of the advantages for both PPC and Organic SEO there are a few things to consider in deciding which is best for your company.

The first thing to consider is how much your online marketing budget will support. Having a larger budget may lead you to PPC where you can set a daily budget. If your budget is more limited, your best option would be to work with the organic SEO methods. The next question your business should ask is what is the average cost per click in your industry? This question could also help in answering how much you are willing to spend. Some averages could be around $2 and the next industry could average at $28. It is a good idea to look into it because it could make your decision easier. The last question might be how competitive are the target keywords in your industry? High competitive rate may shift you towards running PPC campaigns and a lower competitive rate may allow your business to stay on top of the ranks.

There is one other thing that has not been discussed but, extremely important to realize. For some businesses the best option is to do both PPC and SEO at the same time for a few reasons. First, SEO takes roughly 6 months to fully optimize. So, the results are not immediate. Where, PPC has much more immediate results. Why not have a PPC campaign running and gaining leads for your company while your SEO campaign is fully optimizing? Once, your SEO campaign is fully optimized, then you can take the throttle off of PPC. We find taking this method produces the best results.  If you are on the fence today about whether your company needs SEO, PPC, or both give us a call at (804) 228-4400 and we are happy to help!

Search Marketing is Growing

Friday, April 15th, 2011

According to an article on Mashable.com search marketing will grow by 16% this year. A study that was released Wednesday states that 74% of North American ad agencies state that their clients use Facebook. Companies in the study report a rise in mobile marketing, which also accounts for some of the rise in search advertising.

Local search experienced the most significant rise as a new trend and it’s also been noted that behavioral targeting is becoming of more importance as well. The survey also found that more marketers are outsourcing their SEO and social media to agencies, like Netsearch Direct.

This is great news for internet marketing agencies like us because it means increased business and growth. Some other statistics noted in the study include that 75% of companies use Twitter and 52% use LinkedIn for promotion. Also, 44% of companies do SEO in-house and 55% are doing social media marketing in-house as well.

The Growing Importance of Location in Social Media

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

As we’ve seen with Facebook places and Foursquare, location is becoming frequently used in social media, which is making it easier for marketers to specifically target potential customers and use geo-targeting for advertisements.

Twitter is now testing geo-targeted ads. The feature is only being offered as a test to marketers who already use Promoted Accounts and Promoted Tweets (which are paid Tweets that are based on keyword searches on Twitter). The Wall Street Journal has reported that the test can tailor their ads by country, or within the U.S., down to the city level.

It seems clear that location or geo (short for geography) will increasingly become more important when marketing to customers in advertisements and that social media is helping in the growth of targeting specific geographies and location based advertising and marketing.

Facebook Deals Has Arrived

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Facebook recently launched “deals”. Facebook Deals is a product that allows you to create deals on Facebook and run them across multiple store locations. There are different types of deals you can create to achieve different business objectives, all of which are very simple to create. Deals are available to all businesses in the US. Deals are available on a limited basis outside the US. To see if you are eligible to create Deals in the US, be sure to claim your Facebook Place page.

Deals can help you engage with your customers and grow your business. Deals allow you to reward loyal customers with discounts and other special offers, so you can build valuable relationships with your audience. Deals give you a powerful new way to connect with local customers and spread the word about your business. Facebook users can get deals by checking in at local businesses using Facebook on their smart phone. Users can also check online to view the local deals that are offered near them at Facebook Deals. In order for a user to claim a deal they will have to view the deals that are offered on Facebook Places and check into a Place on Facebook using their mobile phone, then show their phone to claim the deal.

Google Introduces Tags & Boost for Local Business Directory Listings

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Google has introduced two more new products for local search and local business directory listings. So what are Google Tags? Google tags literally look like bright yellow small tags that are placed under a search result at the very bottom of the listing.  The tags are yellow markers that allow business owners to promote important aspects of their businesses. If you scroll over the tags on Google you can click on the sponsored link to view offers, photos and other features of the listing. It is important to note that tags do not actually affect your search results though and only work to help businesses add more information for a user to see. You can highlight or draw attention to many different things for your business like: photos, videos, offers, coupons, posts, a menu or reservations page.

What about Google Boost, what’s that? Google Boost is a feature that when added to your businesses listing will allow you to show up on Google Maps, as well as show up for those using mobile devices such as a smart phone. Boost can help attract more visitors to your Google Place’s page or to your businesses website. Google determines which keywords trigger the business’s ad based on the categories that you select. They only pay for the clicks that the ad actually receives. Plus,  you can set a monthly budget and there is no minimum fee. The best thing about Google Boost may be that there is absolutely no ongoing management needed! After signing up Boost will run the ads for you automatically. It’s also important to note that Google Boost does not affect the ranking of organic search rankings. As of right now Google Boost is only available in a few select cities.

Going Local with Search

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Developments in search engines during the last half of 2010 showed that search engines and users are going local with search. Going local with search has now become an important aspect of search engine optimization and search engine marketing. There is strong evidence that consumers are using the internet for their local information far more than traditional methods such as yellow pages and local publications. Local searching means a consumer or user is searching for something in their nearby area, like a restaurant or local business to go to. As more and more consumers get online using either their computer or smart phone to find local businesses it is becoming more important to utilize local search to increase your businesses visibility.

In order to become more visible on local search you should be listed with Google Places and have a properly optimized website with your local information clearly listed on each page of your website. You should include important information like the businesses physical address, phone number and directions to your business.  Also, your website should be optimized with the right local search keywords relevant to your business.  Another important aspect of local search to consider is how your business is rated and whether or not you have good recommendations and good reviews online, which a consumer can see and read when they see your business listed online.

The Future of SEO

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Some people have looked at SEO as just a fad or a fading marketing strategy that they think will soon disappear, however, this is simply not true. SEO does not look like it’s going to fade out any time soon and will continue to exist for years to come. SEO is constantly changing and becoming more sophisticated as Google becomes more sophisticated, but the basic principle of doing what Google wants you to do to legitimately grow a website, through creating links and garnering attention, remains fundamentally the same. SEO can help you put your best face on your website and can help establish your businesses online presence.

Some trends to watch in SEO that will shape the future:

  • More focus on local search, Geo-local
  • Enhanced search engine results pages (SERP’s)
  • Mobile search (with or without SERP’s, showing a map of your local area)
  • Personalization
  • Social search
  • Better link analysis
  • Vertical search

SEO will continue as a practical online marketing strategy and is here to stay for the foreseeable future. If you want your website or your business noticed and found online when users search for you on the search engines then you need SEO to make that happen. We can help you with your SEO strategy today and in the future! We are continually learning and follow all current SEO trends.
